Health NewsRecent studies have noted that men taking vitamin E alone, are likely to have prostate cancer risk is higher.Ten
years ago, scientists began a study called the Selenium and Vitamin E
Cancer Prevention Trial, SELECT abbreviated, to test the widespread
belief that the two supplements that may help or prevent disease.
The study tracks 35 000 healthy men aged 50 years and above in 400 locations in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
Analysis of a number of studies on skin and lung cancer showed that selenium - a type of mineral supplement, or vitamin E may reduce prostate cancer risk. However, recent analysis of the SELECT data showed different results.
Howard Parnes, prostate cancer specialist at the National Cancer Institute and co-author of the findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said that the study was stopped early because no benefit.According to Parnes, the results showed no benefit for men who take vitamin E of 400 IU (International Units) per day. More importantly, the study shows some of the risks that really real.
"Currently, the data showed an increase of prostate cancer by 17 percent, which is statistically significant for the dangers of vitamin E alone," said Howard next.
Eric Klein, another researcher from the Cleveland Clinic said the government study which cost 122 million dollars that ended in 2008 when it became clear that vitamin E will not generate an appreciable reduction of cancer by 25 percent, a target which they tried to show through research.
"But at the beginning of the study is closed, we noted that men who took vitamin E alone, are likely to have prostate cancer risk is higher," said Eric Klein.
Klein said the researchers to track study participants for 18 months after the study was stopped and found that vitamin E may have an impact even after the man stopped consume the supplement.
Eric Klein added, "There is no reason to take vitamin E if you are aged over 55 or 60 years."
Klein added that the study underscores the importance of population-based randomized trials on a large scale to be able to accurately measure the benefits or dangers of micronutrients such as supplements and vitamins.(Voanews.com / Indonesian)fhoto: penelitain latest results show that the men who took vitamin E alone, tend to be more at risk for prostate cancer
